Have you ever wondered what the big difference is between woolen and natural fiber clothes? Well, if you're anything like me, the difference could be quite profound. And if you're anything like me, you are probably wondering how to go about making a difference in your wardrobe without switching to woolen right away. The difference between woolen and natural fiber clothing is pretty simple: natural fiber clothes are warmer. Woolen clothing simply does not do as good a job of keeping you warm.
When most people think of wool, the first thing that comes to mind is a sweater. I'm sorry to say, but those sweaters are made out of natural fibers - there is no denying it. The fibers that make up wool are microscopic compared to natural fibers, so when those fibers get wet, the water acts like glue and holds them together rather than letting them freely float around in the air. If you've ever gotten a really cold sniff from someone on the coldest of winter days, you know why I said that woolen clothing doesn't do nearly as good a job of keeping you warm as cotton or other breathable fabrics do. Woolen clothing simply doesn't allow air to freely circulate, so you end up with damp clothes and achy wrists after getting out of bed.
But what about natural fiber clothing? Do they keep you warmer? There is a significant difference in quality between woolen and natural clothing, and the quality of woolen clothing generally gets better with age. Natural fibers such as cotton can last for decades and provide you with a comfortable garment that stays in shape. A good quality pair of wool socks will usually last you for years.
And natural fiber clothing is much cheaper than woolen clothing. Yes, the price of woolens has come down quite a bit, but that decrease in price has not affected the quality of the garments produced. Natural woolens are generally softer, but that softness is not lost just because it is made from a different material. When you are buying clothing, the softness is more important than the type of fiber used.
The disadvantages of woolen clothing are fairly obvious. It's harder to keep clean, and it can get quite threadbare after a while. It does not drape as well as other fabrics. And you generally need to hand wash your woolen outfit to avoid getting them dirty.
However, these disadvantages are outweighed by the many positive aspects of woolen clothing. They are warmer, they drape better, and they are generally very easy to take care of. When it comes to all of the natural fibers out there, wool is still at the top of the list for overall quality. And most people would rather spend money on something that will last a long time and do the job they need it to do than make a cheap purchase that will only last a year or two. So, if you are looking for an outfit that you know is made from high quality materials and will last for years to come, woolen / natural fiber clothing is definitely the way to go.
